Silicon Valley: A team of leading intellectual property lawyers has joined Kaye Scholer LLP in the firm’s Silicon Valley office, bringing to the firm extensive patent litigation experience in the Life Sciences and Technology industries. The group is led by Deborah Fishman, who joins as a partner, and includes Krista Carter and Katie Scott, who join as counsel.
“The Life Sciences sector is becoming increasingly complex, requiring a range of legal services,” says Firm Managing Partner Michael Solow. “Deborah’s addition to our Life Sciences and Intellectual Property teams extends a dynamic and unique advantage to our clients.”
Fishman advises Fortune 500 companies in business-critical intellectual property and commercial disputes, with a focus on biopharmaceutical and medical device patent litigation. She has litigated through trial five lawsuits worth more than $1 billion and has represented clients before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in post-grant contentious proceedings and before the U.S. International Trade Commission in Section 337 proceedings.
“Deborah and her team perfectly complement Kaye Scholer’s existing nationwide Life Science capabilities,” said Mike Malecek. “Their significant success in litigating biotech patent cases and prosecuting Inter Partes Reviews, as well as their talent in managing IP portfolios, will be an asset to all our clients in that industry.”
Fishman is an Editor-in-Chief of the ABA’s Patent Litigation Strategies Handbook and an active member of the Sedona Conference Working Group on Patent Litigation. She is also an active member of the S.F. Bay Area Intellectual Property American Inn of Court; Stanford Center for Law and Biosciences, Advisory Committee; and Stanford Professional Women’s Organization. She earned her J.D. from Columbia Law School and her B.S. from Stanford University.
“Kaye Scholer offers a depth of bench in serving the legal needs of Life Sciences clients and supporting their business objectives,” said Fishman. “We know that our clients will benefit greatly from Kaye Scholer’s Life Sciences platform and we are excited by the opportunity to enhance and build upon the Firm’s existing capabilities in IP litigation and contentious proceedings before the U.S. Patent Office.”
Krista Carter focuses on patent litigation, due diligence and strategic counseling for innovative biotechnology and information technology companies. Her experience also includes trade secrets, licensing, and antitrust litigation. Prior to her legal career, she served in the U.S. Air Force. Carter received her J.D. from Santa Clara University School of Law and her B.A. from the University of Nebraska.
Katie Scott litigates and counsels clients regarding IP and technology-related disputes, including proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board. Her experience covers all stages of patent litigation across a wide variety of technologies, including biotechnology, medical devices, semiconductor devices, and software. Scott earned her J.D., cum laude, at the University of California, Hastings College of the Law, where she was a member of the Order of the Coif.
