Leading Litigator H. Peter Haveles, Jr. Joins Kaye Scholer

May 14, 2009

New York – Kaye Scholer LLP announced today that H. Peter Haveles, Jr. has recently joined the firm’s Litigation Department as a Partner in its New York office to lead the firm’s Financial Services Litigation Practice.

Mr. Haveles, previously a Partner at Arnold & Porter LLP, focuses his practice on complex disputes involving the financial markets and commercial transactions. Over the course of his career, Mr. Haveles has acquired substantial trial and appellate experience, and has also developed an extensive understanding of his clients’ business operations and the risks that they confront.

As a result of the crisis in the economy and the financial markets, the business risks that financial service institutions face are substantial, and their need for strong litigation representation is critical to the protection of their businesses. Over the coming years, the magnitude and complexity of litigation for these institutions will be overwhelming. Kaye Scholer has built a multi-dimensional team comprised of its litigation, bankruptcy, structured finance and corporate attorneys to ensure that these institutions are well represented during these extreme market conditions.

Kaye Scholer’s Financial Services Litigation team, with Mr. Haveles’ leadership, is well situated to advise financial services institutions and to represent them in court in the event that their business problems cannot be solved on a consensual basis. Kaye Scholer’s Financial Services Litigation team, comprised of litigators and government investigation lawyers with detailed knowledge of special-purpose structures and white collar investigations, assess risk with clarity and precision in order to efficiently manage matters with an eye towards maximizing our client’s recovery and minimizing civil and criminal exposure.

“Peter will provide valuable leadership in protecting the interests of our financial service clients, and his extensive experience advising and litigating on behalf of financial services institutions and other participants in the financial markets will be a great benefit to them,” said Aaron Rubinstein, Chair of Kaye Scholer’s Litigation Department. “His insight will complement that of our existing litigators, as well as that of our transactional lawyers with clients in need of his counsel.”

Mr. Haveles has represented numerous clients in connection with civil litigation and regulatory investigations regarding domestic and foreign securities, options, futures, capital markets, and asset-backed transactions. He has represented financial institutions and corporations in a broad array of commercial and corporate litigation involving corporate governance, shareholder, acquisition, partnerships, lender liability and loan default disputes.

“I am excited by the opportunity to join this talented and diverse group of lawyers dedicated to representing participants in the financial markets. Kaye Scholer not only has a track record of successfully litigating on behalf of its clients, but also has the deep substantive experience necessary to counsel its clients in these difficult times,” said Haveles. “This mentality is the perfect fit for my practice and I look forward to working with my new colleagues.”

Mr. Haveles received his undergraduate degree cum laude from Harvard College and his juris doctorate magna cum laude from Boston University School of Law, where he was editor of the Law Review. He is a past president of Boston University School of Law Alumni Association, where he also served on its Board of Visitors for ten years.
