Sean Boyle is an Associate in the Intellectual Property Department whose practice focuses on patent litigation and other complex civil litigation. Given his advanced background in the life sciences area, Sean has substantial experience litigating patent infringement cases relating to biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, ANDA challenges and medical devices. He has also litigated several computer software patent cases, as well as cases involving semiconductor manufacturing equipment and semiconductor packaging.

Sean has worked on several trials and has significant experience in all phases of litigation.  He is currently part of the Kaye Scholer team that represents Complete Genomics, Inc. in the Northern and Southern District of California in patent disputes relating to sequencing technology. The team recently scored an important victory for the client when they obtained summary judgment of invalidity of the majority of asserted claims and summary judgment of non-infringement on the remaining claims. Sean also represents Affymetrix, Inc. in the District of Delaware in a patent dispute relating to nucleic acid array technology. In the past, Sean has represented a biotechnology company in a dispute relating to a therapeutic recombinant protein, resulting in the eighth-largest reported settlement that year.

Sean’s experience also extends to the computer and semiconductor fields. The technology involved in those disputes were content-sharing software, one-to-many SMS delivery software, and semiconductor manufacturing manifolds.

Prior to his career in law, Sean was a National Institutes of Health fellow at the University of Washington where he studied gene regulation using recombinant adenoviral systems. He also cloned and expressed various drug metabolizing genes, including those implicated in Chagas Disease. Sean has been published in several peer-reviewed journals and book chapters.
