Prior to joining Kaye Scholer, Dr. Freier served as of counsel at Jones
Day. Earlier in his career, he was employed by BASF, where he provided
legal counsel to a number of departments, including the patent
department, the central legal department and the central department for
taxes and duties. Eventually, he was named general counsel of Knoll AG,
the headquarters for BASF's worldwide pharmaceutical activities. As
head of the law, taxes, trademarks and insurance division, he oversaw
numerous national and international transactions in the pharmaceutical
industry.
Dr. Freier is a member of the Licensing Executive Society (LES). He is
fluent in German and in English and has written on intellectual
property and biotechnology topics, including "The enforcement of
intellectual property rights and Article 30, 36 of the EEC Treaty"
(Abwehrrechte aus gewerblichen Schutzrechten und Art. 30, 36
EEG-Vertrag), Diss. 1987; "The investigation rights of the
EU-Commission in the event of antitrust violations" (Die
Ermittlungsbefugnisse der EG-Kommission bei Wettbewerbsverstößen), EWS
1992, 361 ff (co-author with U. Engel); "Legal Aspects of R&D
cooperations in the Pharma and Biotechnology field" (Rechtliche Aspekte
