New Market Risk Capital Rules Adopted

June 13, 2012

Summary: Federal banking agencies establish new capital requirements to cover market risk. Yesterday, the FDIC added its approval to the Fed’s June 7th capital requirements that are intended to protect both the safety and soundness of the affected institutions and the stability of the financial system as a whole. The requirements try to do this by imposing on certain banks and bank holding companies both a computational standard and a governance standard. The new requirements are in addition to certain similar requirements under the Volcker Rule and other rules and it will be important for institutions to integrate all of the different requirements into a coherent system.
