March 13, 2009

Yingxi Fu-Tomlinson, Partner in the firm's Shanghai office, and Timothy Spangler, Partner and Chair of the Investment Funds Group, were quoted in a posting on the Wall Street Journal Private Equity Blog, "China's Great Wall of Private Equity" on March 13, 2009, regarding their recent seminar on private equity in China. "'China is probably the only major economy in the world that, until fairly recently, did not have its own indigenous PE industry,' according to the presentation." The seminar, which also featured Partner Alice J. Young, Chair of the Asia Pacific Practice, discussed the recent developments in regulations and legislation, identified pitfalls, and analyzed potential opportunities for non-Chinese private equity firms to structure and launch effective funds. Tax implications for onshore and offshore investors within the new Chinese legal framework were also discussed by Gary J. Gartner, Partner in the Tax Department.
