Partner Claudia Higgins Discusses New FTC Appointment in The Deal

The Deal reports that President Obama has nominated Edith Ramirez to become the next chairman of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Ramirez is currently one of the FTC’s two Democratic commissioners and would be replacing the outgoing chairman, Jon Leibowitz. She is a Harvard University classmate of President Obama and had a career in intellectual property litigation before joining the FTC.

Kaye Scholer Antitrust Partner Claudia Higgins, a former FTC Assistant Director, believes that Ramirez is a good choice, noting “Her skills and experience as an IP litigator will allow her to the lead the agency very effectively.” Higgins continues, "She has placed a lot of her attention on patents and intellectual property and, when it comes to consumer protection, on online privacy. Her knowledge of the intersection of antitrust and IP rights gives her the skills to lead the commission in its enforcement priorities.”
